Becoming Mr. Archer (A Companion to Rendering)

Becoming Mr. Archer

A companion to Rendering.  Jonas, whose only goal was wealth, ended up as a compassionate, mild-mannered innkeeper.  How did his desire to be rich transform into a desire to enrich the lives of others?  This is the story of Mr. Archer.

Excerpt:

“There’s something I haven’t told you.  Not that I didn’t want to, but he made me promise.”

“He?”  I sat up, pulling her with me.  “Who is this ‘he’?”

     “My dad.”

My quickened pulse calmed, although unease still skittered down my spine.  “He wished you to keep something from me?”

“Just until we were married.  He wanted to make sure of your intentions.”

Looking away, I asked, “Did you share this concern?”

“No!”  She put her hand on my cheek, turning me to face her.  “No, Jonas.  Not at all.  But he was already so upset…”

I nodded.  “So what is this secret?”

“My dad, well, he owns this lodge.”

“Ah.”  The location spoke of affluence, so I understood his precautions - though it did further wound my already injured pride.

“Anyway,” she said, taking hold of my hand, “If we want, this can be our home.”

My spine stiffened.  “He thinks I cannot provide for you, yes?”

     “It’s not that…”

Springing from the bed, I paced an angry path.  I had given the man every benefit of the doubt, but this was a step too far.  “He thinks I am nothing?  That I will be a burden to you?”

     “Jonas, look at me.”

Her calm command halted my steps, but I would not meet her eye.

Author’s Note:

Mr. Archer, the innkeeper in my short story Rendering, intrigued me.  He had a small role, yet I was drawn to his quiet manner and unobtrusive encouragement of the main character.  Who was he?  How did he come to be Mr. Archer?  Here is his story.
